Is the internet making us stupid?
Is the internet making us stupid? To an extent, I’d like to believe that. I’d like to believe it’s not just me becoming more and more forgetful, and losing the ability to read paperback books. As much as I love the internet, as much as it’s done for me, the fact I probably wouldn’t be here without it, I still think it’s a negative thing overall, even if it does help us learn more faster. When I was little, around the 6th grade, I began to really lose my ability to focus on reading paperback books. It wasn’t until 10th grade where I declared to myself that reading a paperback book was near impossible for me. It’s like putting a cat in a bath, it just doesn’t work anymore. In 6th grade I discovered the internet. While that changed my life completely, it did cause me (at least I’d like to think) to lose my ability to read books. I do enjoy reading, it’s all so interesting! But I just don’t have the patience to sit and wait.
I used to enjoy reading every little bit of information I could, everything was so interesting. And yet now, I still find it interesting, but I just skim across it all. The little details are so far gone to me that it’s just astonishing. A great example of all this is I LOVE reading about history. Alternate history, parts of history that are unknown to me, anything. Even to this day, with my large love of learning about history, I struggle to even pick up a book that’s on something I’d kill to learn about. I’d much rather listen to someone talk about it on a podcast or something along those lines than read it. I always wondered why? It’s all so strange, and hard to comprehend really, but I do believe the internet is to blame. Because when it all started, is around the time I began to explore the internet for the first time. I learned about all of it on my own because my parents trusted me. My mother still can pick up a book and read it, and I envy her for that. It’s something I still wish I could do.
